Hidden Hardwood

Rumor had it that we might have hardwood from our front door, down the hallway to the door of the basement.  William decided to pull up a small section to see if this was true. (Notice more paint that we had nothing to do with...)

HARDWOOD! William took it upon himself to rip up all the carpet and the plywood.  This in the long run is going to save us money on flooring AND it is the original hardwood to the church.  The pain was whomever put down the carpet screwed and nailed down the plywood and glued the carpet to the plywood.  This "little" job ended up taking days.

This is the start of the job.  The little section he pulled up to see if there is hardwood.

What the hallway looked like with the nasty carpet.

This is about when he realized this was going to take much longer than he thought.

Start of day two.

Almost done!

Finally, hardwood that hasn't seen the light of day in AGES!

From where I am standing in the above picture is where the hardwood ends.  We were hoping for all the way down the stairs but we were not so lucky.  Looks like we are going shopping for more flooring of some sort.

There are people out there that would just leave the floor as you see it.  Labour wise this sounds very appealing but that is just not how we roll.  Once we have filled a few holes in the walls and painted, we will finish these.  It is going to be a ton of work as we have a ridiculous amount of cracks and holes to fill in the floor, but will be well worth it in the end!

Drywall

It has been super busy for us over the past few weeks.  Between my uni stuff, the church, packing and just life stuff we both feel like we haven't had a moment to just sit and relax.  Perhaps when we finally move into the church we will take a weekend... or perhaps a morning is more realistic.

The drywall is almost all up!

More drywall was ordered and delivered.  The rest should be up next week if everything goes to plan.  We have begun to pick out/up the cosmetic items.  We went back and forth on carpet v.s. laminate flooring.  We finally decided on laminate as with the dogs and the chance of spilling we figured it was the safer/cleaner option.

We have also officially decided on some paint.

These pictures really don't show the actual colours of the paint.  We were having such a hard time deciding on what we like, we decided on colours with interesting names.  The green is called sanctuary and the purple is called divine wine.  Fitting on so many levels!

Paint Stripping a Door

William went out this past Friday and used his day off to help out where he could at the church.  The vapor barrier is up and the window in the bedroom is in.  Everything looks great!

Something I have found very frustrating ever since the first time I walked through the church is that the previous owners have done things like this.

I understand the want/need to test out the paint before deciding but really?  Badly painted stripes in colours that do not go together... I just don't understand!

This interesting painting was also done to a set of doors as you enter the main church area upstairs.

This is the side that faces into the church.

And this is the side that faces into the hallway.

We could see the potential in the doors but wanted to see if there was anything under all that paint worth salvaging.  No sense in planning on using them just to find they are damaged or not even original to the church.

William took one of them off the hinge and we tried the paint stripper on one section just to see what was under there.

We were excited to see the same wood as multiple other items we have so we decided to strip the rest off as well.  I don't know if you will be able to see from the picture but all the paint is bubbling up off the wood.

And this is what the door looks like without all that paint.  This is after only one coat of the paint stripper.

The test area received two coats.

I don't know why someone wanted to cover these with paint.  They already look so much better!  We still need to put one maybe two more coats of paint stripper on this side then tackle the other side and the other door.  We only picked up a small bottle of the stripper as we didn't know how much we needed or if there was even going to be a need.  Yet another project!
